The Birth of Mandala Zorig

…It all started with a dream to build a company from the ground up, and a calling to serve the world.

The Birth of Mandala Zorig

How It Began

Mandala Zorig was born from a simple dream: to create a company where creativity, intelligence, integrity, discipline, and collaboration drive meaningful work. From childhood, I was captivated by making things. I loved art, carpentry, sculpting, and sketching, often crafting toys out of my own imagination or from things I saw on TV.

As I grew, that curiosity matured into a hunger for architecture, paired with an interest in business. I didn't just want to practice design; I wanted to lead a company that I actually enjoyed working at, one that truly reflected my core values.

The Dream and the Lesson

During my college years, I constantly envisioned an office where like-minded people could come together to create work larger than themselves. Early professional practice taught me a vital lesson: great architecture is never a solo act. It requires a diverse, complementary team united by a single vision.

I wanted to build a company defined by integrity, passion, and shared purpose, qualities I struggled to find in existing firms. Over time, as I watched many talented peers leave the country for greener pastures, the fire inside me only grew. It strengthened my resolve to build the space I had always imagined.

The Partnership

Then I met Bijay. Calm, disciplined, and quietly driven, he was the perfect counterbalance to my intensity, passion, and intuition.

Before we officially partnered, we entered several design competitions. At that stage, the scale or nature of the projects didn’t matter to us; we just hungered for that one opportunity that would test our mettle and get us started. Throughout this intense process, it became clear that we were both willing to grind, regardless of the obstacles or our level of experience.

Through these competitions, we proved our mutual commitment, teamwork, and willingness to sacrifice. Our partnership was forged on a shared determination to put the company above ego, the heart and the mind joining forces to create something enduring.

In addition, Khusala Chettri, Chencho (Architect) Vishal Chuwan (Structural Engineer) and Karma Chedha (Electrical Engineer), were initial key players whose shared commitment was vital to our growth. Today, Vishal leads our entire construction department with incredible vigor and intensity. Looking ahead, our current dedicated team members will take on even greater responsibilities as the company grows, aligning our collective future with the vision of each individual.

MANDALA ZORIG: The Power Behind the Name

Mandala

When Bijay, Chencho and I first formalized our partnership, I suggested renaming the firm Zorig Architects to directly reflect our work. But Bijay felt the original name, Mandala, carried a bold, intuitive power. We decided to keep it.

A few years later, a client asked me a simple yet profound question: "Why Mandala? What does it mean?"

I went blank. In that moment, I couldn't explain the literal meaning. All I had in my head were our values: integrity, trust, loyalty, and a shared vision to serve.

Looking for answers, I began to research. In Buddhist tradition, a Mandala is a sacred geometric map of the universe, symbolizing wholeness, cosmic order, and the journey to enlightenment. Furthermore, the act of creating and dismantling a sand mandala symbolizes impermanence and the dissemination of blessings.

Around this same time, I was reading the Bhagavad Gita. Summarized in a single sentence, it teaches us to dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly to our duty without being attached to the fruits of our labor.

Suddenly, the true meaning of our name became clear. It reminded me to serve selflessly with purpose through what I enjoyed  for the benefit of the world. Mandala represented our ethical core, our principles, and a mission bigger than any single individual. Maybe Bijay had simply sensed it right from the start.

Zorig

After 5 years of relentless service, finally our design and build works were able to blend seamlessly under one practice. Now we are able to see with clarity what must be done and what it demands us to be. I have always found the word Zorig fascinating, almost as if it holds echoes of a past life, which might explain why I have always been mesmerized by arts and crafts. Zorig is a Bhutanese term: Zo means the ability to make or create, and Rig means science, craft, or discipline. Maybe Zorig was patiently waiting inside me to be discovered and put to practice with full commitment and unwavering determination.

Much like the name McDonald’s was to Ray Kroc, Mandala was to Bijay, and Zorig was to me.

Mandala is our guiding philosophy; Zorig is our practice. Together, they represent principled purpose put into skilled action, a commitment to deliver excellent, honest and responsible work rooted in integrity.
